The History of The Little Fat Black Pussy Cat Club

A well-loved and popular scene, The Little Fat Black Pussy Cat Club was originally Bradford’s first independently run music venue and the club earned its individual name after a San Francisco poetry circle. After establishing itself as the city’s go to disco/nightclub of the era, between the years 1964-1965, the club hosted members-only events every six weeks and featured a strong blues scene alongside the Northern Soul scene in Manchester at the time. Occasionally the club would also host ‘all-nighters’ and feature live bands including famous faces The Moody Blues and Rod Stewart before his days with ‘The Faces’. The Pretty Things also graced the stage to a delighted crowd on opening night.

Former club-goer John Kershaw reminisces of the venue’s original events, ‘’I remember going to most of these nights. Sometimes we’d go to the Dungeon or The Troutbeck in Ilkley but The Little Fat Black Pussy Cat Club really was a night in its own league. Here I saw bands like the Ginger Baker Band (ex Cream drummer), the Alex Harvey Band, The Pretty Things and numerous others. The place wasn’t licensed though so we used to meet at a pub near the Ice Rink. Back in 1964 I would have been just 17.’’
